Nicole Ari Parker, an American actor who has appeared on film and on television, and in stage productions, is known for portraying Teri Joseph, a flamboyant attorney in the show on Showtime called Soul Food. After her marriage she became Nikki Kodjoe. Growing up living in Baltimore, Maryland, she was always fascinated by acting. In the Maryland high school competition in her early years of training, she was awarded the title for the best actress. Her career in acting started after she joined the Washington Ballet Company as well as theater. The actress received lots of praise for her first large part on The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love. The family was born in Mumbai, India and raised in Nigeria from 7 years old, Contractor was well-versed in the world and an array of cultures at a very young age. She was a boarding student in London from seven to nine years old, then her family moved towards Toronto, Canada, where she spent the majority of her childhood and young adulthood. Contractor had a great academic career throughout her time in Toronto in addition to her training as the ballerina. She was a student at an Etobicoke School of the Arts an specialized arts public high school in which she did not only dance but studied theater as well. Contractor began her acting career at 16 and was a part of the theater for a decade after spending ten years of dance. She accepted a full-scholarship to study at the University of Toronto after graduating. The university offered her master's degree in theater as well as a double major in social and psychology. Contractor with a degree in sociology, having spent a year in university, went on to audition in an open audition for Pericles, at the prestigious Stratford Shakespeare Festival, [Ontario Canadawhich she won the role. The play received rave reviews and her performances during the 92 performances that in the production. It was also voted"the best show of 2002" by Canadian critics in 2002. Contractor accepted an invitation to attend Stratford's Conservatory program.
